Epicurean music

Yes LD I doubt we need a subforum for each category, probably a single thread will do, and perhaps I can PIN each one? So yes just start a thread in the same level under this same subforum. I can create subforums later if you think that would be better(?)

I will pin them to the top of the list as we create them LD. If you think at any point we ought to create subforums instead of asking for posts in the thread, I can do that too. I am beginning to lean that way now, but it's easy to do at any point.

Is it OK if I add Heavy metal?

Martin please do add it if you haven't already done so. I would have estimated the chances that you would have suggested that at about a billion to one - but that just reminds me how often my preconceived notions of Germans is correct - of which my German wife reminds me every chance she gets

Matt I wonder if there is anything smart we should try to do to build a playlist at Youtube along with the work we're doing in each category thread. Will it work just as well to wait til each thread matures and then create a playlist then? Or is there some better way? Not sure if you are better at youtube than I am but I've never really played with their advanced features.

Sounds like the best course. Should be relatively easy to create the playlists.

I typically get three, 30-second ads in a row per 7-10 songs.

I've been experimenting with different criterion. For example, Bobby McFerrin's "Don't Worry, Be Happy" was a contender, but too many lyrics describe negative imagery and imply a Stoic vibe of indifference. In another case, I think there are too few songs about ancient Greek gods, so anything popular that mentions "Venus" is an automatic yes for me. Some songs are not necessarily easy listening (which is the general vibe) but directly address Epicurean concerns like Styx and Black Sabbath, who make an ironic comparison between a soulless consumer culture and flying into the literal void of space. My Hip-Hop additions are similar: while they are not as relaxing, the emphasis on living under-the-radar qualifies it as uniquely epicurean. There's a danger of cynicism in Pink Floyd and Alice Cooper, but their particular songs make it into my list because they wield a polemic against institutionalization and public indoctrination. Something else like "Ordinary Pleasure" by Toro y Moi or "Extraordinary Machine" by Fiona Apple get in for a particularly potent lyric, like "maximize all the pleasure" and Fiona's unique vibe of self-empowerment. Too many songs that feel right are purely romantic and describe a teenage lust that sound appropriate but don't convey the right vibe, whereas Frankie Goes To Hollywood's "Relax" isn't necessarily a favorite of mine, but the meaning his the nail on the head. Just some ideas.

Presumably the different moods lend themselves to different playlists. I think we've done some work on playlists in the past but probably not on Spotify which may be the best format.

I was gonna say Eikadistes that it would be awesome to have the songs listed and the reason why they made the cut, as some of them weren't as obvious to me.

Epicurean Philosophy is not easy to digest, so communicating some of its values thru music is a great idea, while making sure it's not being cartooned down.

Not trying to impose anything onto your private list, just some thoughts.

As it happens I had been looking for an Epicurean list in spotify before and I was disappointed. Also, as an Epicurean, I'd love know the criteria of acceptance of any of these lists.

I think it would be a really great project for us to come up with specialized lists of Epicurean friendly music, and Spotify probably works better than previous efforts on Youtube.

But the key is what we are discussing - musical tastes are so personal that what strikes some of us as purely Epicurean and uplifting will strike others as trash.

The answer almost certainly has to be specialized descriptions of the playlists by genre.
